We welcome you at the new Website of Gymnasium Marne Europaschule.
Gymnasium Marne Europaschule is an upper secondary school situated in Marne in the district of Dithmarschen, about 100km northwest of Hamburg. Marne is a small city in a rural area adjacent to the North Sea and the national park of the Wadden Sea which was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009.
About 60 % of the 630 students come from the surrounding villages where farming is an important occupation and cabbage and other vegetables still require a lot of manual work. The students’ age ranges from ten up to twenty and after their final exams of Abitur they are qualified to start a university career.
Students usually come to Gymnasium Marne Europaschule after spending four years at one of the small local primary schools. They are taught by about 50 staff members in the subjects of German, Maths, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, IT Technology, History, Geography, Politics, Music, Arts or Drama, Philosophy or Religious Education, English, French, Latin, Spanish and Physical Education, History is also taught bilingually in English. The school provides excellent sports facilities including a new athletic track, two gyms and outdoor fields for football, basketball, handball and beach volleyball.
Situated in a very remote area Gymnasium Marne has worked out a European and international profile with a wide range of activities such as international project work e.g. in Comenius projects or class and group exchanges with European and Asian partner schools. In cooperation with a French school students are offered to complete their compulsory work experience in France. Additionally our students take part in meetings and workshops supporting the European idea and many students spend up to one year abroad, thus improving their life and language skills. Due to the involvement in European activities the school was awarded the title ‘Europaschule’ in 2003 by the Ministry of Education.
As an all-day school with lots of extracurricular afternoon activities and tutoring the school also runs a special programme for gifted students and is a center of teacher training in the sciences. In the senior classes students are offered a variety of options for specialisation in the languages, the sciences, physical education or the social sciences.
Different companies actively support the school by granting funds for projects, technical equipment for teaching as well as opening up their state-of-the-art laboratories for our science classes. Thus the school is equipped with the latest technology in the field of computers and interactive boards.
